Carpenters make up the largest building trades occupation in the industry and those with all-around skills are in high demand.Carpenters are involved in many different kinds of construction activities, from building highways and bridges to installing kitchen cabinets. Carpenters construct, erect, install, and repair structures and fixtures made from wood and other materials.This four-level curriculum covers content such as Building Materials, Cabinet Fabrication, and Advanced Wall Systems.

Carpentry Level 1

Module One: Orientation to the Trade

This module reviews the history of the carpentry trade, describes the apprentice program, identifies career opportunities for carpenters, explores the SkillsUSA program, and lists the responsibilities and characteristics a carpenter should possess. (Module ID 27101-13; 2.5 hours)

Module Two: Building Materials, Fasteners, and Adhesives

This module provides an overview of the building materials used by carpenters, including lumber, engineered wood products, concrete, and steel framing materials. The module also describes the various fasteners, anchors, and adhesives used in construction. (Module ID 27102-13; 20 hours)

Module Three: Hand and Power Tools

This module provides detailed descriptions of the hand tools and portable power tools used by carpenters. Emphasis is on safe and proper operation of tools, as well as care and maintenance. (Module ID 27103-13; 10 hours)

Module Four: Introduction to Construction Drawings, Specifications, and Layout

This module describes the information contained in construction drawings, including foundation, floor, and other plan view drawings, as well as how to read them. It also describes how to interpret schedules and specifications, and how to use the 3-4-5 rule to square buildings. (Module ID 27104-13; 22.5hours)

Module Five: Floor Systems

This module describes the layout and construction procedures for floor systems, including how to read and interpret construction drawings and specifications, and how to identify different types of framing systems, floor system components, and floor system materials. It also covers how to estimate the amount of materials needed for a floor assembly and on some common alternative floor systems. (Module ID 27105-13; 25 hours)

Module Six: Wall Systems

This module describes the procedures for laying out and framing walls, including roughing-in door and window openings, constructing corners and partition Ts, bracing walls, and applying sheathing. The module also includes estimating materials required to frame walls. (Module ID 27111-13; 10 hours)

Module Seven: Ceiling and Roof Framing

This module provides an overview of ceiling and roof framing, including the components of ceiling and roof framing, the different types of roofs used in residential construction, and the use of trusses in basic roof framing. The methods for laying out rafters, erecting a gable roof, framing a basic gable end wall, and installing roof sheathing are introduced. It also provides instruction on how to estimate the amount of materials needed for a material takeoff for a roof. (Module ID 27112-13; 47.5 hours)

Module Eight: Introduction to Building Envelope Systems

This module introduces the building envelope system and its components. The module describes the various types of windows, skylights, and exterior doors and provides instructions for installing them. It also includes instructions for installing weather stripping and locksets. (Module ID 27109-13; 12.5 hours)

Module Nine: Basic Stair Layout

This module introduces the various types of stairs and the common building code requirements related to stairs. The module focuses on the techniques for measuring and calculating rise, run, and stairwell openings; laying out stringers; and fabricating basic stairways. (Module ID 27110-13; 12.5 hours)

Module One: Commercial Drawings

This module describes how to read and interpret a set of commercial drawings and specifications. (Module ID 27201-13; 25 hours)

Module Two: Cold-Formed Steel

This module describes the types and grades of steel framing materials, and includes instructions for selecting and installing metal framing for interior and exterior walls, load-bearing and nonbearing walls, partitions, and other applications. (Module ID 27205-13; 15 hours)

Module Three: Exterior Finishing

This module covers the various types of exterior finish materials and their installation procedures, including wood, metal, vinyl, and fiber-cement siding. (Module ID 27204-13; 35 hours)

Module Four: Thermal and Moisture Protection

This module covers the selection and installation of various types of insulating materials in walls, floors, and attics. It also covers the uses and installation practices for vapor barriers and waterproofing materials.(Module ID 27203-13; 7.5 hours)

Module Five: Roofing Applications

This module describes how to properly prepare the roof deck and install roofing for residential and commercial buildings. (Module ID 27202-13; 25 hours)

Module Six: Doors and Door Hardware

This module describes the installation of metal doors and related hardware in steel-framed, wood-framed, and masonry walls, along with their related hardware, such as locksets and door closers. A discussion on the installation of wood doors, folding doors, and pocket doors is also presented. (Module ID 27208-13; 20 hours)

Module Seven: Drywall Installation

This module describes the various types of gypsum drywall, their uses, and the fastening devices and methods used to install them. The module also contains detailed instructions for installing drywall on walls and ceilings using nails, drywall screws, and adhesives. A discussion of fire- and sound-rated walls is also presented. Module Eight: Drywall Finishing

This module describes the materials, tools, and methods used to finish and patch gypsum drywall. A discussion of both automatic and manual taping and finishing tools is presented. (Module ID 27207-13; 17.5 hours)

Module Nine: Suspended Ceilings

This module describes the materials, layout, and installation procedures for many types of suspended ceilings used in commercial construction, as well as ceiling tiles, drywall suspension systems, and pan- type ceilings. (Module ID 27209-13; 15 hours)

Module Ten: Window, Door, Floor, and Ceiling Trim

This module describes the different types of trim used in finish work and focuses on the proper methods
for selecting, cutting, and fastening trim to provide a professional finished appearance. (Module ID 27210-13; 25 hours)

Module Eleven: Cabinet Installation

This module provides detailed instructions for the selection and installation of base and wall cabinets and countertops. (Module ID 27211-13; 10 hours)
