NCCER Electrical Courses


Electricians install electrical systems in structures; they install wiring and other electrical components, such as circuit breaker panels, switches, and light fixtures, and they follow blueprints, the National Electrical Code and state and local codes.To prepare trainees a career in the electrical field, NCCER offers a comprehensive, 4-level Electrical curriculum that complies with DOL time-based standards for apprenticeship.

Electrical Level 1

Module One: Orientation to the Electrical Trade

This module describes the different sectors in the electrical trade, and the types of work and work environments electricians would find in the field. It covers apprenticeship, training programs, and career opportunities. The responsibilities and characteristics a worker should possess are also described. (Module ID 26101-14; 2.5 hours)

Module Two: Electrical Safety

This module introduces the trainees to the safety rules and regulations for electricians, including the necessary precautions for avoiding various job site hazards. (Module ID 26102-14; 10 hours)

Module Three: Introduction to Electrical Circuits

This module introduces the trainee to electrical circuits. It offers a general introduction to electrical concepts used in Ohm’s law. It includes atomic theory, electromagnetic force, resistance, and electric power equations. It also covers series, parallel, and series-parallel circuits. (Module ID 26103-14; 7.5 Hours)

Module Four: Electrical Theory

This module introduces trainees to circuit calculations involving the application of Ohm’s and Kirchoff’s
laws. (Module ID 26104-14; 7.5 hours)

Module Five: Introduction to the National Electrical Code

This module introduces trainees to the requirements and structure of the National Electrical Code®. (Module ID 26105-14; 7.5 hours)

Module Six: Device Boxes

This module explains how to select and size outlet boxes, pull boxes, and junction boxes pursuant to
NEC® requirements. (Module ID 26106-14; 10 hours)

Module Seven: Hand Bending

This module introduces trainees to the methods and procedures used in cutting, bending, and reaming
conduit. (Module ID 26107-14; 10 hours)

Module Eight: Raceways and Fittings

This module introduces types and applications of raceways, wireways, and ducts. It stresses the appropriate NEC® requirements. (Module ID 26108-14; 20 hours)

Module Nine: Conductors and Cables

This module focuses on the types and applications of conductors and covers proper wiring techniques.
It also stresses the appropriate NEC® requirements. (Module ID 26109-14; 10 hours)

Module Ten: Basic Electrical Construction Drawings

This module describes the types and uses of construction drawings. It provides information about the format and content of basic electrical construction drawings and their use in conveying specific construction requirements. It describes the standard format for specifications. (Module ID 26110-14; 7.5 hours)

Module Eleven: Residential Electrical Services

This module introduces trainees to the various types of devices and installation procedures used in residential wiring. It also covers service-entrance and branch circuit calculations and National Electrical Code® requirements. (Module ID  26111-14; 15 hours)

Module Twelve: Electrical Test Equipment

This module introduces the trainee to electrical test equipment. It explains the purpose and use of voltmeters, ohmmeters, clamp-on ammeters, multimeters, megohmmeters, and motor and phase rotation testers. It also covers basic safety and explains category ratings. (Module ID Module 26112-14; 2.5 hours)

Electrical Level 2

Module One: Alternating Current

This module introduces the principles of alternating current. (Module ID 26201-14; 7.5 hours)

Module Two: Theory and Application

This module introduces the operation and applications of various types of motors. It also explains how
motors are rated and covers motor enclosures and braking requirements. (Module ID 26202-14; 20 hours)

Module Three: Electric Lighting

This module introduces the methods and procedures used in the handling and installation of different
types of lamps and lighting fixtures. (Module ID 26203-14; 15 hours)

Module Four: Conduit Bending

Prior to training with this module, it is recommended that the trainee shall have successfully completed Core Curriculum; Electrical Level One; and Electrical Level Two, Modules 26201-14 through 26203-14. It is also suggested that trainees be familiar with NEC® Articles 342, 344, 352, and 358. (Module ID 26204-14; 15 hours)

Module Five: Pull and Junction Boxes

This module introduces the trainees to the methods and procedures used in the selection and installation
of pull and junction boxes. (Module ID 26205-14; 10 hours)

Module Six: Conductor Installations

This module introduces the tools, materials, and techniques used in conductor installations. (Module ID 26206-14; 10 hours)

Module Seven: Cable Tray

This module introduces the types of cable trays and their components, and focuses on the NEC® requirements for cable tray installations. (Module ID 26207-14; 7.5 hours)

Module Eight: Conductor Terminations and Splices

This module introduces the methods and procedures used when making conductor terminations and
splices. (Module ID 26208-14; 7.5 hours)

Module Nine: Grounding and Bonding

This module introduces the NEC® requirements and procedures for proper grounding and bonding. (Module ID 26209-14; 15 hours)

Module Ten: Circuit Breakers and Fuses

This module introduces the methods and procedures used in the selection and installation of circuit
breakers and fuses. (Module ID 26210-14; 12.5 hours)

Module Eleven: Control Systems and Fundamental Concepts

This module introduces the NEC® requirements and procedures used in the selection and installation of
contactors and relays. (Module ID 26211-14; 12.5 hours)

Electrical Level 3

Module One: Load Calculations - Branch and Feeder Circuits

This module explains how to calculate branch circuit and feeder loads for residential and commercial applications. It also covers various derating factors. (Module ID: 26301-17; 17.5 hours)

Module Two: Conductor Selection and Calculations

This module explains how to select conductors for different applications and size conductors based on the expected load and voltage drop. (Module ID: 26302-17; 15 hours)

Module Three: Practical Applications of LIghting

This module explains how to identify lamps and lighting systems, and how to select lighting systems for various applications. (Module ID: 26303-17; 12.5 hours)

Module Four: Hazardous Locations

This module describes the NEC® classifications and requirements for hazardous locations. (Module ID: 26304-17; 15 hours)

Module Five: Overcurrent Protection

This module explains how to size and select circuit breakers and fuses for various applications. It also covers short circuit calculations and troubleshooting. (Module ID: 26305-17; 25 hours)

Module Six: Distribution Equipment

This module examines switchboards and switchgear, including NEC® requirements for installation, grounding, and maintenance. It also covers ground fault relay testing. (Module ID: 26306-17; 12.5 hours)

Module Seven: Transformers

This module describes the construction, operation, and applications of various transformers. It also covers transformer connections and grounding requirements. (Module ID: 26307-17; 12.5 hours)

Module Eight: Commercial Electrical Services

This module describes the components, installation considerations, and NEC® requirements for commercial electrical services. (Module ID: 26308-17; 10 hours)

Module Nine: Motor Calculations

This module describes the calculations required to size the conductors and overcurrent protection required for motor applications. (Module ID: 26309-17; 12.5 hours)

Module Ten: Voice, Data, and Video

This module covers the installation, termination, and testing of voice, data, and video cabling systems. (Module ID: 26310-17; 10 hours)

Module Eleven: Motor Controls

This module provides information on selecting, sizing, and installing motor controllers. It also covers control circuit pilot devices and basic relay logic. (Module ID: 26311-17; 12.5 hours)

Electrical Level 4

Module One: Load Calculations - Feeders and Services

This module examines basic load calculations for residential and commercial applications, including raceway fill, conductor derating, and voltage drop. (Module ID: 26401-17; 20 hours)

Module Two: Health Care Facilities

This module examines the installation of electrical systems in health care facilities, including the requirements for life safety and critical circuits. (Module ID: 26402-17; 10 hours)

Module Three: Standby and Emergency Systems

This module explains the NEC® installation requirements for electric generators and storage batteries. (Module ID: 26403-17; 10 hours)

Module Four: Basic Electronic Theory

This module explains the function and operation of basic electronic devices, including semiconductors, diodes, rectifiers, and transistors. (Module ID: 26404-17; 10 hours)

Module Five: Fire Alarm Systems

This module covers the technologies, codes, and wiring approaches used to assemble a fire alarm system. Installation and troubleshooting techniques are also explained. (Module ID: 26405-17; 15 hours)

Module Six: Specialty Transformers

This module covers various types of transformers and their applications. It also provides information on selecting, sizing, and installing this equipment. (Module ID: 26406-17; 10 hours)

Module Seven: Advanced Controls

This module discusses applications and operating principles of solid-state controls, reduced-voltage starters, and adjustable-frequency drives. It also covers basic troubleshooting procedures. (Module ID: 26407-17; 20 hours)

Module Eight: HVAC Controls

This module provides a basic overview of HVAC systems and their controls. Electrical troubleshooting and NEC® requirements are emphasized. (Module ID: 26408-17; 15 hours)

Module Nine: Heat Tracing and Freeze Protection

This module presents heat-tracing and freeze-protection systems along with various applications and installation requirements. (Module ID: 26409-17; 10 hours)

Module Ten: Motor Operation and Maintenance

This module covers motor cleaning, testing, and preventive maintenance. Basic troubleshooting procedures are also presented. (Module ID: 26410-17; 10 hours)

Module Eleven: Medium-Voltage Terminations/Splices

This module identifies types of medium-voltage cable and describes how to make various splices and terminations. It also covers hi-pot testing. (Module ID: 26411-17; 10 hours)

Module Twelve: Special Locations

This module describes the NEC® requirements for selecting and installing equipment, enclosures, and devices for special locations that require unique attention. These locations include sites such as places of public assembly, theaters, carnivals, agricultural and livestock facilities, marinas, swimming pools, and temporary facilities.
