NCCER Sprinkler Fitting Courses

Fire sprinklers are one of the most important methods for protecting life and property. They provide protection 24 hours a day, seven days a week, even when building occupants are asleep or absent from the premises. But sprinkler systems provide adequate protection only if designed and installed properly. Therefore, sprinkler system installation is the primary focus of this training program. Sprinkler systems are designed and installed based on specific codes and standards from organizations like the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), with worker safety considerations governed by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). As a four-level curriculum, Sprinkler Fitting covers topics such as Copper Tube Systems, Stand Pipes and Fire Pumps.

Sprinkler Fitting Level 1

Module One: Orientation to the Trade

This module identifies sprinkler fitter career opportunities and looks at typical work environments. It examines trade-specific safety hazards and workplace safety. It covers the correct use of common tools. (Module ID 18101-13; 5 hours)

Module Two: Introduction to Components and Systems

This module covers some of the basic components of a sprinkler system, including sprinklers, underground and aboveground pipe, valves, alarms, hangers, bracing and restraints. It provides an overview of the major types of sprinkler systems and the code requirements for the installation of these systems. (Module ID 18102-13; 7.5 hours)

Module Three: Steel Pipe

This module describes the materials used in steel piping systems and the tools used to cut and thread steel pipe. It explains how to determine pipe lengths between fittings (takeouts). It describes methods to cut, thread, and groove pipe. It covers threaded, plain-end, and flanged fittings and discusses grooved pipe fittings and installation techniques. (Module ID 18103-13; 22.5 hours)

Module Four: CPVC Pipe and Fittings

This module describes the handling and storage of CPVC pipe and outlines methods and tools for cutting, chamfering, and cleaning CPVC pipe, including calculating takeouts. It identifies CPVC safety concerns. Joining techniques are described, particularly the solvent-cement (one-step) method. The rules for using plastic pipe hangers are also explained.  (Module ID 18104-13; 10 hours)

Module Five: Copper Tube Systems

This module describes copper tubing and fittings along with cutting and bending tools. It explains how to measure, cut, ream, clean and solder copper tube. The brazing process is described as are brazing metals, fluxes, and brazing equipment. Support bracing and grooved couplings are also discussed. (Module ID 18105-13; 10 hours)

Module Six: Underground Pipe

This module identifies the types and properties of soil. It discusses guidelines for working in or near a trench, including methods for digging trenches and making them safe. It describes underground pipe installation for various types of pipe, including bedding, backfilling, thrust blocks, and restraints. It explains in-building risers, hydrants, yard valves, and hydrant hoses. It covers testing, inspection, flushing, chlorinating, and underground test certificates. (Module ID 18106-13; 17.5 hours)
Sprinkler Fitting Level 2

Module One: Hangers, Supports, Restraints, and Guides

This module identifies and describes strength/spacing requirements, types, and installation of pipe hangers, supports, restraints, and guides. It covers earthquake bracing, sleeving, and firestopping. Cutting hangers to specified lengths is also included. (Module ID 18201-13; 15 hours)

Module Two: General Purpose Valves

This module covers the various types of valves and valve applications used in the sprinkler industry, including service procedures for standard valves. The trainee learns how to install OS&Y valves, butterfly grooved valves, and tamper switches. Procedures to disassemble, service, and reassemble check valves are also included. (Module ID 18202-13; 15 hours)

Module Three: General Trade Math

This module explains basic math principles and how to solve everyday problems, including converting quantities from the English system to the metric system and vice versa. It covers specific sprinkler fitting problems such as calculating 45-degree offsets and tank volume; centering sprinkler heads using the target, square offset, and geometric methods; and problems relating to changes in elevation, sprinkler discharge, and hanger sizing. Module Four: Shop Drawings

This module explains how to read the drawing legend and identify drawing symbols, including common structural and standard sprinkler system symbols. It covers how to read drawings to identify materials, calculate the square footage and number of sprinklers required, lay out sprinkler hanger locations, and identify sprinkler orifice sizes from drawings. It describes how to identify pipe sizes and cut lengths shown on installation drawings. (Module ID 18204-13; 32.5 hours)

Module Five: Standard Spray Fire Sprinklers

This module explains obstructed and unobstructed sprinkler installations. Standard spray sprinklers are discussed relative to occupancies and maximum coverage calculations. Sprinkler spacing is calculated using the small room rule and the protection area rule. Identification of spray sprinklers using a sprinkler identification number (SIN) is also covered. Module Six: Wet Fire Sprinkler Systems

This module explains the purpose, function, and operations of wet system components. It describes riser check valves, alarm check valves, and trim; flow, tamper, and pressure switches; fire department connections and hose stations; antifreeze systems; faulty pressure gauges; inspector’s test connections and auxiliary drains; and hydrostatic testing and test pumps. The trainee learns how to trim an alarm check valve, perform a hydrostatic test, calculate the specific gravity of an antifreeze solution, and complete a contractor’s materials and test certificate. Module Seven: Dry-Pipe Systems

This module explains the purpose, function, and operation of components used in a dry-pipe system. It discusses dry-pipe valves and trim, air supplies, accelerators and exhausters, and fire department connections. It covers installation of pressure gauges on alarm valves and accelerators, setting up and adjusting air maintenance devices, and resetting and troubleshooting dry-pipe systems. Dry-pipe pitch is also covered. (Module ID 18207-13; 25 hours)
Sprinkler Fitting Level 3

Module One: Deluge/Preaction Systems

This module covers different types of preaction and deluge systems. It discusses deluge valves, auxiliary detection systems, release systems, and hydraulic and pneumatic activation. It also covers installation and troubleshooting techniques. (Module ID: 1803-13; 2.5 hours)

Module Two: Standpipes

This module identifies and explains wet and dry standpipes; describes standpipe sizing, classification, and building codes; and reviews standards that must be followed for installation. It explains fire department connections, sleeves, bracing, and fire stopping. (Module ID: 18302-13; 2.5 hours)

Module Three: Water Supplies

This module identifies the chemical and physical properties of water and covers the different water supplies available for automatic sprinkler systems. It describes the types of tanks, water main configurations, flow test procedures, system meters, fire department connections, and split pit requirements. (Module ID: 18303-13; 2.5 hours)

Module Four: Fire Pumps

This module identifies and explains various fire pump systems, pumps, and drivers, controllers, and sensing lines. It describes supervision and project requirement checklists. Testing, maintenance, and troubleshooting are discussed, as well as inspection and maintenance in existing pump rooms and frequently encountered problems. (Module ID: 18304-13; 2.5 hours)

Module Five: Application-Specific Sprinklers and Nozzles

This module introduces special sprinklers and nozzles. It covers various types of sprinklers and nozzles and the area of coverage, positioning, and obstruction requirements. (Module ID: 18305-13; 2.5 hours)
Sprinkler Fitting Level 4

Module One: System Layout

This module identifies and explains the basics of system layout, including design criteria, types of hazards, and coverage area for sprinklers. (Module ID: 18401-13; 2.5 hours)

Module Two: Inspection, Testing, and Maintenance

This module identifies and explains the inspection, testing, and maintenance of wet pipe systems, dry pipe systems, preaction/deluge systems, and special systems. (Module ID: 18402-13; 2.5 hours)

Module Three: Special Extinguishing Systems

This module identifies and explains exposure systems, water spray systems, foam systems, carbon dioxide systems, Halon systems, auxiliary systems, and local alarm systems. (Module ID: 18403-13; 25. horus)

Module Four: Introductory Skills for the Foreman

This module describes the qualities and responsibilities of a foreman, including an explanation of documentation and tracking. (Module ID: 18404-13; 2.5 hours)

Module Five: Procedures and Documentation

This module explains the importance of following proper procedures and accurate documentation for a project. (Module ID: 18405-13; 2.5 hours)
