ABC Carolinas School To Career Programming
The ABC Carolinas Chapter School to Career Program connects our member companies with local schools to encourage students, parents, and educators to explore the various career opportunities in construction and to strengthen our workforce for the future of our industry. Committee members serve as mentors to promote interest in construction-related careers.
As part of the partnership with local high schools, the Chapter also hosts an annual design & building competition. The S.H.E.D. (Students Hands-on Experience Day) Program allows high school drafting and carpentry students to compete in a shed design and building competition. The drafting competition consists of creating framing plans and exterior elevations for a 8’0”x11’6” shed. A panel of local architects judge the drafting competition and determine the design winners. The design winners are awarded laptops capable of supporting their school’s drafting software. Following the shed design competition, high school carpentry students will compete over a 3-day period to build the winning design. Our general contractor and subcontractor team partners are responsible for mentoring their high school teams prior to and throughout the build, but will not assist in the actual build. Mentoring consists of educating students on safety, quality, planning, communication, and scheduling. The shed building competition is judged by local building inspectors and safety officers from various member construction companies.
