NCCER Plumbing Courses


Most people are familiar with plumbers who come to their home to unclog a drain or install an appliance. In addition to these activities, however, plumbers install, maintain, and repair many different types of pipe systems. For example, some systems move water to a municipal water treatment plant and then to residential, commercial, and public buildings. Other systems dispose of waste, provide gas to stoves and furnaces, or supply air conditioning. Pipe systems in power plants carry the steam that powers huge turbines. Pipes also are used in manufacturing plants, such as wineries, to move material through production processes. NCCER’s four-level curriculum covers topics such as Plumbing Tools, Types of Valves, and Potable Water Treatment.

Plumbing Level 1

Module One: Introduction to the Plumbing Profession

This module introduces trainees to the plumbing profession. Trainees will become familiar with the
tasks and responsibilities of professionals in the construction industry. (Module ID 02101-12; 5 hours)

Module Two: Plumbing Safety

This module reviews the common causes of plumbing-related accidents and injuries. Trainees will learn
how to identify hazardous situations and unsafe conditions as well as how to handle and respond to
these situations and conditions. (Module ID 02102-12; 22.5 hours)

Module Three: Tools of the Plumbing Trade

This module reviews the basic plumbing tools used to measure, lay out, cut, drill, bore, and ream. Trainees will learn how to safely use, properly care for, and maintain plumbing tools. (Module ID 02103-12; 10 hours)

Module Four: Introduction to Plumbing Math

This module introduces some of the basic math used by plumbers in the field. Trainees will learn how to
use basic math to calculate pipe length. (Module ID 02104-12; 12.5 hours)

Module Five: Introduction to Plumbing Drawings

This module introduces the types of construction drawings typically used in the plumbing trade, explains the relationship among these drawings, and discusses applicable code requirements. Trainees will learn how to read, interpret, and sketch construction drawings, as well as how to draw lines to scale. (Module ID 02105-12; 17.5 hours)

Module Six: Plastic Pipe and Fittings

This module introduces the various types of materials, schedules, and applications of plastic piping. Trainees will learn how to determine the appropriate types of fittings, valves, hangers, and supports needed for plastic piping. Trainees will learn to properly measure, cut, and join plastic piping. (Module ID 02106-12; 12.5 hours)

Module Seven: Copper Tube and Fittings

This module discusses the materials, schedules, and properties of copper tube, fittings, and valves. Trainees will learn how to measure, ream, cut, join, and groove copper tube, as well as how to hang and support copper tube. (Module ID 02107-12; 12.5 hours)

Module Eight: Cast-Iron Pipe and Fittings

This module discusses proper and improper applications of cast-iron piping. Trainees will learn how to identify materials, schedules, and fittings used with cast-iron piping, as well as how to properly measure, cut, join, and support cast-iron piping. (Module ID 02108-12; 12.5 hours)

Module Nine: Steel Pipe and Fittings

This module discusses the types of steel pipe and fittings used in plumbing applications. Trainees will learn about common fittings and valves; measuring, cutting, and joining steel pipe; and the hangers and supports used with steel pipe. (Module ID 02109-12; 12.5 hours)

Module Ten: Introduction to Plumbing Fixtures

This module discusses the materials commonly used to make fixtures, the most common types of fixtures, and the types of faucets available. Trainees will learn how each type of fixture and faucet operates, as well as how to choose the proper fixtures and faucets for a variety of installations. (Module 02110-12; 7.5 hours)

Module Eleven: Introduction to Drain, Waste, and Vent (DWV) Systems

This module explains the factors that influence DWV system design and how different types of drains, fittings, vents, and pipe are used to move waste out of a building. Trainees will learn installation requirements that prevent malfunctions in the system. (Module ID 02111-12; 10 hours)

Module Twelve: Introduction to Water Distribution Systems

This module discusses the processes in which water is distributed. Trainees will learn to identify the components and functions of a water distribution system, as well as explain the relationships among the components. (Module ID 02112-12; 10 hours)

Module Two: Reading Commercial Drawings

This module provides instruction in the identification and interpretation of civil, architectural, structural, HVAC/mechanical, plumbing, and electrical drawings, as well as how to use them to ensure accurate dimensions, generate RFIs, locate plumbing entry points, and establish piping routes and fixture locations. (Module 02202-13; 25 hours)

Module Three: Structural Penetrations, Insulation, and Fire-Stopping

This module covers how to cut, bore, and sleeve structural members using the appropriate tools including proper locations, restrictions, and reinforcement techniques; how to install fiberglass and flexible foam insulation on pipe; and how to install fire-stopping on walls, floors, and ceiling according to code. (Module 02203-13; 15 hours)

Module Four: Installing and Testing DWV Piping

This module provides instruction in locating, installing, connecting, and testing a complete drain, waste, and vent (DWV) system including how to develop material takeoffs, set up and use levels, locate building sewers and building drains, locate fixtures, and test a DWV system. (Module 02204-13; 30 hours)

Module Five: Installing Roof, Floor, and Area Drains

This module provides instruction on the proper techniques for locating, installing, and connecting roof, floor, and area drains and floor sinks according to code. It also covers the installation of waterproof membranes and flashing, drain components, shower pans, trap primers, and covers proper drain applications. (Module 02205-13; 5 hours)

Module Six: Installing and Testing Water Supply Piping

This module provides trainees with the proper techniques for locating, installing, and testing complete water service and distribution systems, including meters, water heaters, water softeners, and hose bibbs. The module also introduces basic backflow prevention and water hammer prevention, and discusses the installation of shower and tub valves, ice maker and washing machine boxes, and pipe stub-outs and supports. (Module 02206-13; 20 hours)

Module Seven: Types of Valves

This module provides trainees with an overview of the many types of valves, their components, and valve applications, and explains how to service common valves. (Module 02207-13; 5 hours)

Module Eight: Installing Fixtures and Valves

This module provides instruction on how to install basic plumbing fixtures, including bathtubs, shower stalls, lavatories, sinks, water closets, and urinals; reviews the installation of associated valves, faucets, and components; and discusses how to connect appliances such as dishwashers, food-waste disposers, refrigerators and ice makers, and washing machines. (Module 02208-13; 20 hours)

Module Nine: Installing Water Heaters

This module provides an introduction to gas-fired, electric, tankless, heat pump, and indirect water heaters, components, and applications; reviews proper installation and testing techniques; and covers the latest code requirements for water heaters. (Module 02209-13; 10 hours)

Module Ten: Basic Electricity

This module provides an introduction to electrical safety and the principles of electricity, including voltage, current, resistance, and power. Trainees will learn about important electrical formulas, circuitry, and common plumbing-related electrical applications. (Module 02210-13; 10 hours)

Module Eleven: Fuel Gas and Fuel Oil Systems

This module provides trainees with an introduction to the techniques required for the safe handling of natural gas, liquefied petroleum gas, and fuel oil, and also reviews fuel gas and fuel oil safety precautions and potential hazards, applications, systems installation, and testing. (Module 02211-13; 20 hours)
